Kwame Gyamerah, a 49-year-old farmer with vast agricultural holdings, has been adjudged the Overall District Best Farmer at the 41st Adansi North District Farmers’ Day celebration held at Bobriase.

Mr Gyamerah, whose impressive portfolio includes a 79-acre oil palm plantation, 18 acres of coconut, seven acres of cassava, and six acres of maize, took home the top prize.

In the female category, the Queen Mother of Ahinsan, Nana Tewah Kurubour III, was honoured as the District Best Female Farmer.

Speaking on the theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Charles Kofi Ogbeh, highlighted the district’s alignment with the government’s agenda. He emphasised the “Nkokɔ Nketenkete” programme, which encourages the rearing and consumption of local poultry to sustain domestic production.

Mr Ogbeh revealed significant plans to modernise agriculture in the district, announcing that talks were underway to establish five Farmer Service Centres within the district to serve as one-stop shops retailing a complete range of inputs, services, information, finance, technology, and market connections.

To further support production, the DCE noted that 68,000 palm seedlings have already been distributed to farmers. Additionally, the District Agriculture Department expects to receive 10,000 chicks for distribution to poultry farmers, underscoring the President’s commitment to the Agricultural Economic Transformation Agenda.

Mr Prince Asare, Head of the District Agriculture Department, stressed that the celebration’s theme reflected the urgent need to reduce import dependency. He noted that the district now boasts of 92 Farmer Based Organisations (FBOs) due to rigorous sensitisation efforts.

Mr Asare lauded the massive contributions of development partners, including the Minerals Commission, Solidaridad, AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), SOCCODEVI, and Safety Net.

He enumerated Key interventions to include:

    • AGA & Solidaridad (CROPP): Through the Climate Resilient Oil Palm Project (CROPP), 13 farmers received improved oil palm seedlings, inputs, and capacity building and 577 bags of NPK fertilizer provided to beneficiary farmers.
    • SOCCODEVI (ToGETHER Project): Initiative has provided financial literacy education to Old Edubiase, Dompoase, and Agogooso, significantly improving the financial stability of farmers in savings groups and announced that AGA and Solidaridad will assist in forming new Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) in five additional communities to help farmers overcome financial constraints hindering agricultural growth.
