William Troost-Ekong has officially announced his retirement from the Nigerian national team, bringing an emotional close to a decade-long international career that saw him rise from promising debutant to one of the most respected captains in Africa.

The 32-year-old defender, who currently plays for Al-Kholood in the Saudi Professional League, confirmed that he will still travel with the Super Eagles to Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but strictly in a supportive, non-playing role.

Troost-Ekong’s international story began in 2015 when he made his debut in an AFCON qualifier against Chad. From that moment, he became a constant presence in Nigeria’s back line.

He played a crucial role in helping Nigeria qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, emerging as one of the team’s most reliable performers on the biggest stage.

But Troost-Ekong’s defining moment came years later, at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

Wearing the captain’s armband, he led Nigeria to the final, scored crucial goals, including the final and was ultimately named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Even in the twilight of his playing days, Troost-Ekong continued to show dedication. He featured in five of Nigeria’s six matches during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, helping the Super Eagles finish top of their group and secure another ticket to the continent’s biggest tournament.

His retirement marks the end of an era, but his legacies, leadership, consistency, and loyalty is firmly etched into Super Eagles history.
