United States football legends have said they would prefer to have Ghana in their group for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The World Cup draw is set to take place in Washington DC on December 5, 2025, with 48 teams to be grouped from A to L, forming 12 groups in total.

During discussions on Fox TV about the draw and possible opponents for one of the host nations, legends such as Alexi Lalas, Landon Donovan, Stu Holden, and Cobi Jones expressed their desire to see Ghana in the US group.

Lalas explained that the Black Stars and the US share a rich football history, and it would be an intriguing matchup if the two countries meet at the Mundial.

He noted that the current Ghana squad is not particularly strong, and he believes the US could secure a win over the West African giants if they face each other.

“History matters and Ghana is in Pot 4. When we reach there and it’s the hot one, it is going to be Ghana. This is not a great Ghana team, but it is still Ghana. Give me Ghana. We have plenty of history when it comes to playing against them,” Alexi Lalas said.

Afterwards, Landon Donovan, who was part of the US team that lost 2-1 to the Black Stars during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, also joined the call.

Donovan admitted that he is still hurt by that defeat and expressed optimism that the US could get revenge against Ghana if they meet at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I want Ghana head-on. 2010 still hurts. It is the reason the draw is so crucial. It’s fun, pageantry, and all that. If you get Morocco, Norway, and Ghana you will be like, maybe…” Landon Donovan said.
