England manager Sarina Wiegman says Ghana provided a strong physical contest during the December 2, 2025, 2-0 friendly win at St Mary’s Stadium, as the European champions closed out the year on a positive note.

Speaking to ITV after the match, Wiegman admitted England could have scored more, but highlighted the strength of Ghana’s duels in key areas of the pitch.

“Ghana were strong in the duels and we wanted runs in the half spaces and get numbers in the box,” she said. “We had some big opportunities. We weren’t that lucky at moments either.”

England created a number of chances, hitting the woodwork four times, but were made to work for their breakthrough. Lucia Kendall opened the scoring after six minutes, with substitute Alessia Russo adding a stoppage-time penalty.

Wiegman also noted that improving the connection in attack remains a focus, despite another dominant showing.

“A lot of other players, and we know as individuals they are really good, but we have to make these connections again,” she added. “I hoped we would score more. If we had taken the chances better, it would have been more than this.”

Ghana are gearing up for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, to be staged in Morocco from 17 March to 3 April 2026.
