ASA Savings and Loans Ltd has taken a bold step in environmental stewardship by donating waste bins and organizing an awareness campaign at Abossey Okai Anglican Basic School (A), in collaboration with the Buzstop Boys environmental advocacy group.

Sabina Sebigon, Mataheko Branch Manager for ASA Savings and Loans Ltd, explained that the initiative aims to instill proper waste management practices among students. “The purpose of this donation is to encourage students on how to keep their environment clean. We are providing bins so they won’t litter their surroundings,” she stated.

Speaking to James Safo, Vice Leader of Buzstop Boys, he emphasized on the group’s use of social media to drive change.

He painted a stark picture of the future: “In the next 25 years, the plastic we see will be three times the fishes we see in the sea, meaning we will be fishing more plastic than fishes.”

Safo highlighted the economic benefits of recycling, noting that proper waste management can generate significant income while securing the future. Drawing parallels with the COVID-19 pandemic’s global impact, he stressed the urgency of environmental action.

The Buzstop Boys advocate the “5Rs” framework for waste management:

Reduce- Minimize plastic use to prevent flooding and waste creation

Reuse – Repurpose plastic items instead of discarding them

Rethink – Transform plastic waste into new products

Recycle – Convert waste into valuable, usable items

    Refuse– Reject single-use plastic products

Safo mentioned that recycling creates new economic opportunities while protecting the environment for future generations.

Philip Laryea, Headmaster of Abossey Okai Anglican Basic School, expressed gratitude for the initiative. “This has been a wonderful day, and this presentation will turn things around as far as sanitation in this school is concerned. The sensitization you have given us is timely and will help us manage waste disposal, which has become a challenge,” he said.

The collaboration represents a significant step toward building environmental consciousness among Ghana’s youth while addressing pressing sanitation challenges in educational institutions.
