Over 250 professional and amateur golfers drawn from Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Canada, and the USA will from November 13 to 16 converge on the Royal Golf Club, Kumasi, to vie for honours at the prestigious 89th Ghana Open Championship.

The championship, put together by the Ghana Golf Association (GGA) and under the auspices of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is also aimed at celebrating the 25th Silver Jubilee as the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool.

The tournament, sanctioned by the R&A, and World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®), is also expected to have golfers from Togo, Zimbabwe and the Philippines, among others.

Speaking to the Times Sports, the Honorary Secretary of the GGA, Mr Solomon Allotey, revealed that the tournament will have four main categories, notably championship men and ladies, handicapped men and ladies, support men and ladies as well as the seniors which will complement the main event, the professionals’ category.

He expressed delight at the opportunity to host the championship for the second year running, noting that they were poised to put out a spectacular event that will match up to the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Asanteheme’s reign.

Mr Allotey called on corporate Ghana to help promote and grow the sport to a potential PGA standard.
