    GhanaWeb Feature by Frank-Kamal Acheampong

On live television, where seconds turn to legacies, tone is a currency and conviction the coin. In Ghana’s bustling newsrooms and under their glossy studio lights, a group of women have taught audiences to listen again.

They have done so not only for breaking news but for a shifting moral grammar that centers on accountability, gendered storytelling, and public advocacy.

These are not merely presenters; they are editors of national conversations, producers of social pressures, and sometimes, architects of policies debates.

They are no longer just faces behind microphones or voices reading bulletins, they have become storytellers, advocates, and change-makers shaping how Ghana sees itself.

Parliament petitioned to remove President Mahama

In this GhanaWeb feature, we explore some of the female media personalities fit for those descriptions and accolades.

    Portia Gabor

When Portia Gabor walks into the TV3 newsroom, there’s possibly an unmistakable quiet respect that follows.

Her calm tone, poised delivery, and steady gaze behind the news desk are products of nearly two decades of work, but her real strength lies beyond the studio lights.

Portia’s award-winning features have given Ghana some of its most compassionate and deeply humane journalism in recent years.

Her stories, including “Beggars Paradise,” “Wealth for Health,” and other investigative reports do not just inform; they expose and compel.

She has shown Ghanaians the lives of street children, the struggles of the disabled, and the quiet tragedies hidden behind public neglect.

For Portia, journalism is less about headlines and more about heart-lines; stories that link policies to people.

When she was named Ghana Journalist of the Year (2021), it was a recognition not only of technical excellence but of courage.

Portia has spoken openly about the biases she faced, yet she never lowered her voice.

Each award she’s earned, for health, science, and development reporting, have come from that same resolve to make journalism mean something.

She has amplified the voices of street vendors, accident victims, forgotten patients, and single mothers with the same gravitas she gives to national headlines.

In a media space that can often value drama over depth, Portia Gabor has chosen empathy as her signature.

    Afia Pokua (Vim Lady)

If Portia Gabor embodies calm precision, Afia Pokua, widely known as Vim Lady, represents the other necessary side of the journalistic coin; boldness.

Her voice, commanding and sometimes confrontational, has made her one of Ghana’s most recognisable and fearless broadcasters.

Vim Lady’s journey is as remarkable as her character. She began her career at the Multimedia Group, where she worked with Adom FM as an editor and an on-air personality.

Her incisive commentaries and fiery debates on national issues quickly gained her attention and criticisms in equal measure. In a space where women are often expected to play safe, she has broken through with unapologetic energy.

She is currently the Head of Programs at Despite Media Group. Her nickname, “Vim Lady,” captures her essence: drive, confidence, and enthusiasm. It’s stuck because she embodies all three.

She once told a story about how, when she started, senior journalists warned her that being “too vocal” could hurt her career.

Instead, it became her superpower. But her influence isn’t limited to the airwaves.

Through her Vim Foundation, Afia has built classroom blocks, refurbished schools, and donated supplies to rural communities.

Her humanitarian efforts reveal a side often hidden behind her hard-talking persona, a deep compassion for the ordinary Ghanaian.

    Nana Yaa Brefo

If Portia is the steady hand, and Vim Lady the firebrand, Nana Yaa Brefo is the bridge between the two: unflinching, accessible, grounded.

From her early days reading Twi bulletins, to hosting current affairs programs and managing shows that reach both the urbane and the grassroots, her voice has breadth and reach.

Known for her blunt honesty, she speaks in a language many understand, sometimes raw, sometimes teasing, but always with integrity.

Her journey has been marked by resilience. She has survived rumors, financial struggles during school, and periods where she had little more than her voice and conviction.

Today, as part of Media General’s stable on Onua TV/FM, she uses those hard-earned lessons in her interviews: pressing politicians, demanding clarity, and representing the concerns of ordinary people.

She does not avoid difficult conversations; for her, they are part of the job.

    Nana Aba Anamoah

Nana Aba Anamoah is an unmistakable presence. For years, she has moved effortlessly between hard news, human-interest storytelling, and public advocacy.

As a media manager and on-air personality, she has used reach and influence to lift issues that matter; from sports to social campaigns, and she has turned the art of engagements into a platform for civic debate.

Nana Aba’s voice is public and unapologetic, and she marries charisma with a drive to convert broadcasts into action.

Her voice has also been a present force in changing erroneous narratives about young people, especially, even as she continues to inspire many young women through many of her progressive initiatives of change.

    Gifty Anti

Long before the current generation began shaping conversations, there was Oheneyere Gifty Anti, the woman who made it possible for them to believe they could.

From her early days as a broadcaster on GTV, to her iconic talk show – The Standpoint, Gifty Anti has spent more than two decades amplifying women’s voices and challenging traditional norms.

Her show, which focuses on gender, leadership, and social change, remains one of the most consistent women-centered programs in Ghanaian television history.

Through The Standpoint, she has given a platform to survivors, activists, and unsung heroes whose stories might have otherwise been forgotten.

Beyond television, she is a mentor and public speaker, inspiring young women to pursue excellence without apologies.

Gifty Anti’s enduring relevance is not just about longevity; it’s about legacy. She opened doors that others now walk through confidently.

    Bridget Otoo

Bridget Otoo embodies transformation; from outspoken journalist to government communicator.

A former anchor and reporter for TV3, Bridget Otoo has made her name as one of Ghana’s most articulate and assertive broadcast journalists.

Known for her sharp questioning and confident deliveries, she also became one of the few female anchors willing to openly discuss feminism, inequality, and corruption on live television.

Her media career has been marked by a boldness rarely seen among her peers.

Whether taking on politicians or confronting gender bias in the newsroom, Bridget is never afraid to say what others only whisper.

In June 2025, her career took a historic turn when she was appointed Presidential Staffer in charge of Government Communications by President John Dramani Mahama, a move that underscored how far she has come.

    Serwaa Amihere Esq

Before earning her “Esq” title as a qualified lawyer, Serwaa Amihere had already become one of Ghana’s most recognisable faces in broadcast journalism.

As a lead news anchor and host at GHOne TV, she blends elegance and authority on screen, inspiring young women to pursue careers in media despite stereotypes about beauty and intellect not coexisting.

Beyond the newsroom, Serwaa has used her platform to drive real social changes. Through the Serwaa Amihere Foundation, she has supported vulnerable women, single mothers, and children with education and healthcare needs.

Her outreach programs, especially during school reopenings and festive seasons, highlight her belief that influence should come with responsibilities.

Together, these women represent a powerful mosaic of Ghanaian womanhood, different in style, united in purpose.

They’ve broken ceilings in a profession that once sidelined women, and they’ve shown that journalism is not just about telling stories, it’s about changing them.

Through their voices, Ghana’s media has become more representative, more fearless, and more human.

They’ve opened doors for a younger generation of women who now see journalism not as a man’s world, but as a platform where intellect, empathy, and courage can coexist.

They are the voices of change, and their echoes will shape Ghana’s media narrative for generations to come.
