Appearing on Onua TV’s Maakye program, outspoken broadcaster Captain Smart launched a bold attack on the Ghanaian media. He accused journalists of failing the people by choosing silence and financial comfort over truth and accountability. According to him, the press has abandoned its responsibility to protect citizens from national challenges.

Here are three key issues, he believes journalists must speak up about.

    1. The Destruction Of Natural Resources

Captain Smart pointed to illegal mining — popularly called galamsey — and the damage it is causing to Ghana’s water bodies. He said journalists have failed to confront the destruction of rivers and forests, choosing instead to look away while powerful interests destroy the environment. For him, this silence is a betrayal of future generations who will suffer the consequences.

    2. Political Influence Over The Media

According to Captain Smart, many journalists have become compromised by political leaders. He argued that some media personalities are more interested in receiving financial rewards and favors than exposing the truth. This, he said, has weakened the press and turned it into a tool for politicians, instead of a watchdog for the people.

    3. Lack Of Courage To Tell The Truth

The broadcaster also accused journalists of lacking bravery. He insisted that most reporters and presenters are afraid to confront uncomfortable realities, leaving the people in the dark about the true state of the nation. Captain Smart emphasized that his personal mission is to speak openly, regardless of threats or pressure. He urged journalists to rise above fear and use their platforms to protect the country.

    The Bigger Picture

In his conclusion, Captain Smart reminded his colleagues that the media space belongs to everyone, not just a select few. He challenged journalists to put the nation first, rise above political influence, and boldly speak the truth whenever Ghana’s progress and well-being are at stake.
