The Gender-Based Violence Court at the Police Headquarters has sentenced a 29-year-old fisherman, Nii Baah Afful, to one week’s imprisonment with hard labour for physically assaulting his partner, Francisca Aryee.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on April 11, 2025, the incident occurred on March 20, 2025, in Korle Gonno, where Afful was seen attacking Francisca while she was holding their 8-month-old baby during a domestic dispute.

The statement further indicated that investigations revealed the couple, who have two children, lived under the same roof.

The Accra Regional Police Intelligence Unit arrested Afful on March 22, 2025, after which he was remanded. He was later arraigned before the Gender-Based Violence Court on March 24.

At a hearing held on April 9, 2025, Afful pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court subsequently sentenced him to one week’s imprisonment with hard labour at the Nsawam Maximum Security Prison.

In the statement, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command emphasised the importance of reporting all forms of domestic abuse.

Authorities encouraged victims and witnesses to speak up and seek justice through the appropriate legal and support channels.

“The Greater Accra Police Command urges the public to report all forms of domestic abuse. Victims are encouraged to speak up and seek help through the appropriate legal and support channels,” the statement read.
