The 2026 Honda Football Championship has been officially launched in Tamale, setting the stage for a five-day university tournament aimed at unearthing emerging football talent across the country.

The launch ceremony, held at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, brought together stakeholders from sports, education and business, all united in promoting youth development through football. The competition, scheduled from March 24 to 28, will feature eight tertiary institutions battling for honours.

Northern Regional Director of the National Sports Authority, Ibrahim Alhassan Jihad, welcomed the decision to host the tournament in Tamale, highlighting its potential to boost sports in the region.

President of the Ghana University Sports Association, Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, praised organizers including Honda, Overseas Union Limited and RITE Sports Services for creating a platform for student-athletes.

The group stage draw saw UDS, UPSA, UENR and Bolgatanga Technical University placed in Group A, while the University of Ghana, UMaT, UDS-Business and Tamale Technical University make up Group B.

Organizers say the tournament will combine competitive football with talent identification, providing a pathway for the next generation of Ghanaian stars.
