The 2026 Ashanti Regional Inter-Schools and Super Zonals Athletics Championship in Kumasi has been hailed as one of the most competitive editions in recent years, rekindling memories of the event’s golden era in the late 1980s and 1990s.

Staged under the auspices of the Ghana Education Service (GES), the three-day competition brought together leading senior high schools across the Ashanti Region. The extension from two to three days was widely praised for easing athlete fatigue and improving scheduling, although security lapses outside the stadium marred an otherwise successful event.

The female division delivered some of the most electrifying moments, with standout sprinters such as Gladys a.k.a. Gaza of St. Louis, Norah of Adventist SHS and Fulera of T.I. Amass thrilling spectators. Their performances underscored the region’s reputation as a breeding ground for national talent.

The championship, a key qualifier for national school competitions and a talent pipeline for Ghana’s youth athletics teams, attracted significant media attention, boosted by local platforms and pro-Ashanti social media pages. Sponsorship support and logistics from W-Consult, alongside improved kits for participating schools, enhanced the event’s profile.

However, incidents involving students from non-participating schools, including Islamic SHS and Nkawie SHS, raised security concerns.

Despite the challenges, organizers expressed optimism about live television coverage next year, citing renewed public interest and Ashanti’s continued dominance at national schools’ athletics festivals.
