The Clerk of Parliament, Rev. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, led a delegation of Parliamentary staff and officials from Primeval Media to present the 2025 Democracy Cup to the Ghana Armed Forces High Command.

This marked the beginning of a series of ceremonial visits scheduled ahead of the upcoming game between Accra Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics.

The short ceremony which took place on the forecourt of the Office of Chief of Defense Staff on the afternoon on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, was attended by some of the top officials from the Ghana Armed Forces.

The trophy was received on behalf of the Chief of Defense Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, by Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing and other senior officers of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Clerk of Parliament, Rev. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror after presenting trophy to Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing said the Democracy Cup has come to stay and will be played every year as a tool to promote peace and togetherness.

“The Democracy Cup has been accepted as one of the national events which will be observed. So on our national calendar, the Democracy Cup is a critical item which we would have to relate it to as a nation every year,” he stated.

Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing also welcomed the initiative of using football to promote national unity and pledge that officers of the army will come in their numbers to support the game on September 5.

“As neutral players in our democratic dispensation, and that is the armed forces, we actually welcome this agenda which has been set up by our legislative arm of government, spearheaded by the Right Honourable Speaker, and we assure you that come September 5th, we will mobilise our personnel in their numbers to come and grace this important occasion.”

The second edition of the Democracy Cup will be held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on September 5, 2025.

There will be a curtain raiser match between Parliament and the Judiciary before the headline game between Accra Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics.
