New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, believes the party would have performed better and won the 2024 general elections with an Akan Christian as its flagbearer.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia, who is a Northerner and a Muslim, failed to draw votes in areas traditionally considered strongholds of the NPP.

In an interview with Oyerepa FM monitored by GhanaWeb, Eugene Boakye Antwi, known as a maverick politician, noted that Dr. Bawumia was unable to attract and convince his fellow Northerners and Muslims to vote for him.

“Bawumia has said he would do some introspection, but certain facts must be told. Bawumia’s own people, the Northerners, did not vote for him. His fellow Muslims also did not vote for him. These are issues we kept discussing. I stated some time ago that whenever a party is going into an election, it must play to its strengths. NPP’s history has shown that the party wins in areas dominated by Akans and Christians. In my constituency, Subin, there are 170 polling stations, and the NDC won in 18 polling stations. A closer look will show that these were areas with people from other tribes and Muslims.

“So, in selecting a candidate, you must pick someone who appeals to your base or strength. All the constituencies in the Bono East Region were taken by the NDC, except one. The Central Region is gone. The Western Region is also gone. These are Akan and Christian-dominated areas. The people of Zongo did not vote for Bawumia. The five regions in the North also did not vote for him. However, where the party is strong, we have also lost our seats. When I point this out, people get emotional and accuse me of not liking Northerners and Muslims, but that is not true. It’s not about that. In elections, you present a candidate who can win you power. Everything I said previously has come to pass.”
