The Ghanaian government has made significant progress in implementing the “No Fees Stress Policy” aimed at alleviating financial burdens on students in public tertiary institutions. According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, approximately 15,000 first-year students have benefited from the policy, with more expected to receive support after verification.

The policy’s objective is to ensure financial constraints don’t hinder students’ pursuit of higher education. It targets first-year students enrolled in public tertiary institutions. Disbursements have been made to students who have paid academic fees, with remaining students to receive payments after verification. The policy is expected to have a far-reaching impact, benefiting tens of thousands of additional students in its initial phase and beyond.

President John Dramani Mahama is set to officially launch the policy at a public event in Koforidua. The government has allocated GH¢499.8 million for the No-Academic-Fee initiative, underscoring its commitment to this transformative educational policy.

Over 57,327 students have accessed the dedicated online portal, with 41,647 students completing the registration process. The registration is necessary for obtaining students’ banking details to facilitate reimbursement.

Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak clarified that first-year university students won’t receive direct cash refunds. Instead, funds will be credited toward their tuition fees for the second year of study, ensuring financial accountability and mitigating potential logistical challenges.
