A 15-year-old Nigerian national has been rescued by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) after being trafficked to Ghana.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the victim, after being trafficked into Ghana, was forced by her traffickers to engage in sex work at Tarkwa in the Western Region.

The police said that further medical checks conducted on her show that she is five weeks pregnant, and that one person, a 25-year-old female suspect, has been arrested.

Providing details of the case, the police, in a statement dated Wednesday, November 5, 2025, said that the victim had been reported missing by her father, who is based in Nigeria, in October 2025, after he became unsure of her whereabouts.

The victim was said to have been promised a job in Ghana by her captors; however, after being trafficked to Ghana, she was subjected to several abuses.

“On Monday, 3rd of November, 2025, police arrested 25-year-old Joy Ogbonna at Aboso near Tarkwa, following a report by the victim’s father, Ogbonno Onuigbo, who said his daughter went missing in the month of October 2025, in Nigeria. The victim later called him on the 24th of October 2025, revealing that she had been trafficked and abused in Ghana,” portions of the statement read.

The police further stated that one other suspect, identified as Golden Blessing, is at large and is suspected to be hiding in Nigeria.

The statement revealed that the victim called her father in Nigeria with the help of a stranger’s phone, leading to the suspect’s arrest and her rescue after a report was lodged with the police.

“Police investigations indicated that one Golden Blessing, who is currently on the run, lured the victim from Enugu to Lagos under the pretext of offering her a cleaning job and later handed her over to Joy Ogbonna, who transported her to Tarkwa.

“Upon arrival, the suspect confined the victim in a room, forced her into sex work, and collected the proceeds. Through the intervention of a helpful passerby, the victim was able to contact her father, leading to her rescue. A medical report confirmed that the victim was five weeks pregnant,” the statement added.

It further said that; “The suspect, Joy Ogbonna, is currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court soon. Efforts are ongoing to arrest her accomplice, Golden Blessing, who is believed to be in Nigeria.”
