The Ghana Police Service has arrested eleven individuals involved in illegal mining, commonly referred to as ‘galamsey’, along the Bonsa River in the Western Region.

The operation, carried out by the Western Central Regional Police Command on March 31, 2025, led to the arrest of seven Ghanaian and four Chinese nationals.

Five of the suspects—Wei Qinwei, Yao Yongji, Nsoh Oto (Agologo), Kwadwo George (Sergio), and Emmanuel Van (Atta)—were arrested at Bonsa, while the other six—Nuang Shichuan, Huang Xinbao, Douglas Ayambilla, Elvis Aborta, Michael Tettey Komlorm, and Ibrahim Dauda—were captured at Wassa Agona.

The individuals are currently in custody and will be arraigned before court to face charges related to illegal mining

In a statement, the police reassured citizens of their relentless efforts to combat illegal mining and crime.

“We remain committed to enforcing the law and ensuring security in all parts of the country,” the police said.

Galamsey continues to be a pressing issue in Ghana, causing severe environmental degradation, water pollution, and destruction of farmlands.

The latest arrests mark another step in the government’s crackdown on illegal mining operators.
