    On the night of February 20, 2025, Ghana lost one of its most beloved actors, Mawuli Semevo, weeks after he was hospitalized due to a fire incident.

    As the country mourns, we reflect on the remarkable career of this legendary figure and the projects that cemented his status as an icon.

    Here are some of Mawuli Semevo’s works that’shut down’ our screens and defined his career:

    1. The Good Old Days: The Love of AA (2010)

    Directed by Kwaw Ansah, this film tells the story of two high school friends who fall in love and face obstacles to prove their love is worth fighting for.

    2. Like Cotton Twines (2016)

    Written and directed by Leila Djansi, this film follows an American volunteer in Africa who tries to save a young student from a religious custom that would force her into slavery.

    3. 1st Kings (2020)

    A short film about a Canadian nephew who was expected to lead a colonial war after the mysterious disappearance of a Ghanaian monarch.

    4. Black Earth Rising (2018)

    This series follows a Rwandan woman, rescued from genocide, as she seeks justice for her past.

    5. A Stab in the Dark (1999)

    Directed by Veronica Quarshie, this film follows Effe, a young woman who disrupts a family after having an affair with her friend’s father.

    6. Escape to Love (1996)

    Directed by Ernest Abbeyquaye, this film tells the story of Kwesi Aboagye, who fights to protect Amina, a woman fleeing an arranged marriage.

    7. Harvest at 17 (1992)

    Directed by Kwaw Ansah, this film explores the lives of two teenage lovers who defy their parents’ wishes to live life on their own terms.

    8. Chronicles of Odumkrom: The Headmaster (2015)

    A humorous yet poignant drama about sacrifice and volunteerism in a Ghanaian village.

    9. Rejected (1994)

    A story of resilience and overcoming societal challenges.

    10. The Lost Stool (1997)

    A tale of tradition and conflict in a Ghanaian community.

    Stage legacy

    Beyond film, Semevo starred in numerous stage productions, including ‘Tiger of Liberation’ and ‘Firestorm’.

    His final performance was in ‘The Gods are Not To Blame’ in 2024, where he delivered a stellar performance, unaware it would be his last.

    Lasting legacy

    Mawuli Semevo’s life was a testament to his dedication, craft, culture, and community.

    His performances captured the essence of Ghanaian storytelling, blending tradition with contemporary issues.

    As tributes pour in, it is clear his impact will continue to be cherished.

    Although his voice has been silenced, his legacy lives on through the stories he told and the lives he touched.
