The second day of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration saw a lot of violence, as protesters and personnel of the Ghana Police Service clashed on a number of occasions.
The police came prepared and could not tolerate the misconduct of the demonstrators as they did on the first day of the demonstration, Saturday, September 21, 2024.
The police confronted the demonstrators on actions they deemed illegal, which led to a number of clashes and arrests.
Here are some of the clashes at the demonstration captured by GhanaWeb’s team on the ground and in other viral videos.
Clash during removal of protesters from blocking the street:
The protesters during the first day of the demonstration blocked some of the roads at the 37 Roundabout, which affected traffic. They even turned away a bus full of police officers without any confrontation.
But on Sunday, September 22, 2024, the police would have none of that.
GhanaWeb’s team captured the police officers forcibly removing the protesters from the street, who were also captured pushing back.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a leading member of the Democratic Hub, the organisers of the demonstration, could be seen at the scene pushing away a barricade of the police, which resulted in another confrontation.
Clash over towing of a car:
There was another clash when the police officers attempted to remove a truck carrying the sound system of the demonstrators.
The demonstrators stood in front of the car and faced off with the police, trying to stop them from removing the truck.
As the clash was ongoing, Barker-Vormawor sneaked quietly and went to remove the key of the tow truck, attempting to bolt with it.
Clash during arrest of protesters:
Attempts by the police to arrest protesters who were accused of engaging in unlawful acts also resulted in clashes.
The protesters engaged in scuffles with the police, trying to prevent them from arresting their colleagues.
Some of the arrest scenes were hilarious as the protesters being arrested were carried like objects by police as they rained insults and cautions.
“One day, where I’m going to be, I’ll handle your case; just watch my face very well,” one of the protesters who was being whisked away said.
