Asante Kotoko narrowly defeated Hearts of Oak to win the inaugural Democracy Cup on Wednesday, July 18, 2024.
The Porcupine Warriors secured a 2-1 victory over their arch-rivals at the Accra Sports Stadium to claim the trophy.
Asante Kotoko took the lead with a penalty converted by Justice Blay in the first 30 minutes of the game.
They maintained their advantage until halftime, heading into the dressing room with the lead.
Hearts of Oak managed to equalise early in the second half when new signing Asamoah Boateng Afriyie connected with a cross from the right.
However, Asante Kotoko regained their lead on the hour mark when Peter Aminu scored with a fantastic near-post finish after Hearts of Oak lost possession in their own area.
Despite a valiant effort from Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko held on to secure the 2-1 victory.
In celebration of their win, Asante Kotoko have arranged a friendly match against Major League Soccer side DC United as part of their prize package.
