A two-year-old South Australian girl has been rushed to hospital after being viciously attacked by her family dog, a 35kilogram South African boerboel.

Dad Chris Walker told 7NEWS he heard the dog growling and ran outside to find it mauling his daughter Ellara Rose’s face at around 1.30 on Monday afternoon.

He managed to pull the dog off his defenceless child and then neighbours held the animal until an ambulance arrived to the house on Camilla Avenue in the suburb of Osborne, 25km north of Adelaide’s CBD.

The toddler’s face was badly bitten, but neighbours say it could have been much worse if her dad had not reacted so quickly.

Ellara Rose was rushed to the Woman and Children’s Hospital with her mother by her side.

Neighbour Anthony Dear said ‘the ambos were just pulling up as I was pulling in,’ and that the dog was still there at the time.
