Tsunami warning issued following magnitude 7.5 earthquake off coast of Indonesia

A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Indonesia after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake shook the nation’s south.

The earthquake struck the Flores Sea, about 112km north-west of Larantuka, at a depth of 12km on Tuesday.

Experts said tsunamis could hit a series of small island communities in the Flores Sea, including Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and Southeast and South Sulawesi.

Metoerologist Muhamad Sadly urged residents to stay away from beaches until the warning is lifted.

Frightening footage posted on social media showed locals in Maumere running down the street while screaming in terror, as horns and alarms sound in the distance.

Another showed a shop owner with his arms wrapped around a shelf of alcohol bottles to make sure they don’t break.

Indonesian officials do not believe the earthquake caused any injury or damage, but people in nearby towns said it ‘felt like a wave’.

‘Everyone ran out into the street,’ Agustinus Florianus told Reuters.

Zacharias Gentana Keranz lives in Larantuka near where the quake struck, and said ‘it felt like a wave, up and down’.
