Train strikes for this weekend: What services are running on Saturday and Sunday?


The RMT is on strike today which has caused travel chaos for thousands across the country.

Services have been cancelled because of the industrial action by the union, which is the 34th walkout since the dispute started.

Aslef union held a walkout on Friday and has also banned overtime today.

Services were delayed or cancelled today, starting later and finishing earlier than usual.

Picket lines were mounted outside railway stations across the country, and the RMT said it continued to receive support from members of the public.

Some services will be running later on Sunday too as a result of the industrial strike action by RMT

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said: ‘After a week, the RDG has formally responded to our initiative to try and reach a negotiated settlement to the national dispute.

‘While it is encouraging that the train operating companies want to continue dialogue with us next week, a fresh proposal will be needed to progress this dispute towards a settlement.’

Below we have listed all of the disruption you can expect to face during the strikes.

Avanti Westcoast

According to National Rail, customers should expect the Avanti West Coast timetable and operating hours to be reduced significantly and expect services that run to be extremely busy.

With each strike day, late services the night before and early services the next day will also be affected.

On Saturday, Avanti West Coast plans to run four trains per hour to and from London Euston: one to each of Manchester (via Crewe and Stockport), Liverpool, Birmingham and Preston (with a limited service extending to Carlisle).

These will be during limited hours with the first train of the day departing from Euston at 8am and the last train will depart after 5pm.

There will be no Avanti West Coast service to / from North Wales, Shrewsbury, Blackpool North, Stoke-on-Trent and Edinburgh.

Also, there is engineering work that may affect travel.

C2C

There will be two trains per hour from Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness via Laindon calling at all stations. Two trains per hour Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness via Ockendon. One train per hour from Fenchurch Street to Grays via Rainham.

The first and last services of the day will run at the normal scheduled times.

All services will run as 8 carriages except for a small number of early morning and late night services which will run as 4 carriages.

Chiltern Railways

Some services have been cancelled altogether and some train stations are not even offering replacement services

There is a very limited timetable will operate due to industrial action and planned major engineering work.

Limited service between 8am and 10pm. One train per hour between Marylebone and Banbury. One train per hour between Marylebone and Oxford.

One train per hour between Marylebone and Aylesbury via Amersham. Trains will not call at Harrow-on-the-Hill, Rickmansworth, Chorleywood or Chalfont & Latimer. No Chiltern services operating north of Banbury. No trains all day at Wembley Stadium, Northolt Park, South Ruislip, Warwick, Warwick Parkway, Hatton or Lapworth all day.

Cross Country

Reduced service on most routes. No service between Birmingham New Street and Cardiff Central or Birmingham New Street and Nottingham. Trains from Birmingham New Street to Bristol, Southampton, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester, Peterborough and Manchester will all be running a reduced service.

East Midlands Railway

A limited service will operate across the CrossCountry network, with first trains running later than usual and last trains terminating much earlier than usual.

Also, there is no no service at all on the route between Nottingham and Cardiff Central via Birmingham New Street.

Limited service between 6.30am and 6.30pm only. Engineering work is also taking place at Newark Castle, closing various lines. Services on the Leicester-Lincoln-Grimsby route will operate between Nottingham and Leicester only.

EMR Intercity: 1tph between Nottingham and St Pancras; 1tph between Sheffield and St Pancras. EMR Connect: 1tph between Corby and St Pancras. EMR Regional: 1tph between Derby and Nottingham; Derby and Matlock; Sheffield and Nottingham; and Leicester and Nottingham (stopping service). Two-hourly service between Nottingham and Skegness, only calling at Grantham, Sleaford and Boston.

Gatwick Express

A limited service will run across the network, with services starting later and finishing much earlier than usual. Some stations will not have a service all day.

Usual non-stop Gatwick Express service between Victoria, Gatwick and Brighton will not run.

There will instead be extra stops at Clapham Junction and East Croydon, and these trains will be operating as Southern services.

Great Northern

This is also a limited service will run across the network, with services starting later and finishing much earlier than usual. Some stations will not have a service all day.

One train per hour between Cambridge and Ely, and Cambridge and King’s Lynn.

Two trains per hour between London King’s Cross and Cambridge, with different stopping patterns for each.

Two trains per hour between London King’s Cross and Peterborough; London King’s Cross and Welwyn Garden City; and London King’s Cross and Stevenage.

Great Western Railway

There is an extremely limited service will operate. There will be a reduced operating window; services will start at 7am and journeys must be completed by around 6pm.

The affected services are:

  • London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads
  • London Paddington and Oxford
  • London Paddington and Cardiff
  • London Paddington and Plymouth (calling Pewsey / Westbury / Castle Cary)
  • London Paddington and Newbury
  • London Paddington and Reading / Didcot Parkway
  • West Ealing and Greenford
  • Slough and Windsor
  • Maidenhead and Bourne End
  • Twyford and Henley-on-Thames
  • Reading and Basingstoke
  • Didcot and Oxford / Banbury
  • Newbury and Bedwyn
  • Reading and Redhill
  • Cardiff Central and Westbury
  • Bristol and Plymouth

Greater Anglia

Service only operate between 7am and 11pm.

No services for Bishop’s Stortford to Stratford; Colchester to Walton-on-the-Naze via Colchester Town; Hertford East to London Liverpool Street; Ipswich to Felixstowe; Manningtree to Harwich Town; Marks Tey to Sudbury; and Meridian Water to Stratford.

Due to engineering works, buses will replace trains between Norwich and Ipswich, and Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds.

Heathrow Express

Normal service but with early finish. Last Train departs London Paddington at 8.40pm, Heathrow Terminal 5 at 8.42pm and Heathrow Central at 8.47pm.

Hull Trains

A normal service is running today .

London Northwestern Railway

Limited service between 7am and 7pm.

Three trains per hour between Milton Keynes and London Euston; one train per hour between Birmingham New Street and Northampton; and six buses per hour between Milton Keynes and Northampton due to engineering works.

One train per hour from Birmingham New Street to Birmingham International via local stations; One train per hour from Birmingham New Street to Liverpool Lime Street; and one train per hour from Birmingham New Street to Wolverhampton via local stations.

LNER

A reduced service will operate today.

Trains will start later and finish earlier than usual. Trains that do run are expected to be busy.

Northern

Northern will be operating a very limited train service on the following routes only between 8am and 5pm.

Also, there are no buses on strike days and following the strike day there will be some later starts to train services.

The services affected are:

  • Liverpool – Manchester Airport
  • Leeds – York via Micklefield
  • Leeds – Ilkley
  • Leeds – Skipton
  • Leeds – Bradford Forster Square
  • Leeds – Moorthorpe – Sheffield
  • Leeds – Hebden Bridge via Bradford
  • Darlington – Saltburn

South Western Railway

Significantly reduced service on a limited number of lines. Large parts of the network closed.

Trains only run between 7am and 7pm for Waterloo to Southampton; Waterloo to Woking; Waterloo to Basingstoke; Guildford to Woking; and Salisbury to Basingstoke.

There will also be two trains per hour on the Windsor Line from Ascot to Waterloo (via Hounslow); Windsor to Waterloo (via Twickenham); Waterloo to Ascot (via Twickenham); and Waterloo to Windsor (via Hounslow).

Southeastern

Only 57 out of its 180 stations will open.

A limited service will run on the Dartford line, Sevenoaks line, Bromley South line and High Speed line via Ashford.

Southern

A limited service will run across the network, with services starting later and finishing much earlier than usual. Some stations will not have a service all day.

Trains that do run will be busier than usual and you may not be able to board.

The usual non-stop Gatwick Express service between London Victoria, Gatwick Airport and Brighton will not operate.

Two trains per hour between London Victoria and Brighton; London Victoria and Gatwick Airport; London Bridge and Brighton; London Bridge and Gatwick Airport; London Bridge and Three Bridges; Brighton and Hove; Brighton and Barnham; Barnham and Three Bridges via Horsham; Brighton and Seaford; and Brighton and Eastbourne. Two trains per hour between London Victoria and Sutton; London Victoria and Epsom Downs; London Victoria and West Croydon; London Bridge and Tattenham Corner; Caterham and Purley; London Victoria and East Grinstead; and Redhill and Reigate. One train per hour between Oxted and Uckfield; London Blackfriars and Sevenoaks; and Plumstead and Rainham.

Greater Anglia

Services will operate between 7am and 11pm, with all last trains reaching their destination by 11pm.

Thameslink

Limited service. Two trains per hour between St Pancras International and Bedford; and between St Pancras International and Luton.

The usual non-stop Gatwick Express service between London Victoria, Gatwick Airport and Brighton will not operate.

TransPennine Express

Heavily reduced services due to industrial action.

Between Manchester Piccadilly and York, six local services, three semi-fast services (towards Manchester Piccadilly) and four semi-fast services (towards York).

Six services between York and Scarborough.

Five services in both directions between Preston and Manchester Airport. Five services in both directions between Sheffield to Cleethorpes.

Transport for Wales

Transport for Wales are not involved in the industrial action, but some services will be impacted by the strikes affecting other train operators.

Some services in the early morning before 7am and evening after 7pm will be amended.

All day, South Wales to Manchester Piccadilly trains in both directions will set down only at Stockport due to overcrowding concerns and will not stop at Wilmslow.

West Midlands Railway

Limited service between 7am and 7pm.

Buses also replace trains between Birmingham New Street and Redditch / Bromsgrove on this date due to engineering works.

London Euston – Northampton – Birmingham New Street: 3 trains per hour between Milton Keynes – London Euston, 1 train per hour Birmingham New Street – Northampton and 6 buses per hour Milton Keynes – Northampton due to engineering works.

Birmingham New Street – Birmingham International via local stations: 1 train per hour. Birmingham New Street – Liverpool Lime Street: 1 train per hour.

Birmingham New Street – Wolverhampton via local stations: 1 train per hour.

Birmingham New Street – Lichfield City / Redditch / Bromsgrove: 2 trains per hour between Lichfield City – Birmingham New Street (buses will run between Birmingham New Street – Redditch / Bromsgrove and Lichfield City – Lichfield Trent Valley due to engineering works).

Kidderminster – Whitlocks End / Dorridge via Birmingham Snow Hill: 1 train per hour between Kidderminster – Whitlocks End and 1 train per hour between Kidderminster – Dorridge.

Stourbridge Town – Stourbridge Junction: up to 6 trains per hour.

Birmingham New Street – Rugeley Trent Valley: 1 train per hour.
