President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that the commissioning of the James Town Harbour reaffirms the NPP government’s commitment to invest in infrastructure development in the country and improve the livelihood of those in the fishing industry.

Speaking at the commissioning of the harbour on Friday, September 13, 2024, he noted ” We will continue to invest in superior infrastructure to reduce post-harvest losses, improve fish catch, and reduce our dependency on importing fishing. Despite the naysayers, we have delivered.”

He was hopeful the $60 million fishing harbour would serve as a vital hub for the fishing economy, creating jobs and boosting local businesses in the Jamestown area.

“It will create jobs, empower the economy, and revitalise the lives of the fisherfolk and traders of Jamestown. We will inject new energies into the heart of this community. I have no doubt that its benefits will ripple across the nation,” he stated.

The harbour constructed by the CRCC Harbour and Channel Engineering Bureau Group Co. Ltd. under the China Aid to Ghana Fishing Port Complex Project is expected to transform the livelihoods of the local fishing community in Accra and enhance the country’s fishing operations.

With a fish market comprising 112 stalls, a 60-ton-per-day ice-making plant, and a cold storage capacity of 600 tons, the Jamestown Fishing Harbour aligns with the government’s vision to support sustainable resource management and food security.

The facility, which includes a ship repair workshop, administration blocks, fire safety systems, a cold storage unit, a fish processing centre, a fire and police station, and a crèche, is expected to generate around 4,000 direct and indirect jobs for the youth in the Ga community.
