This is the heart-stopping moment a driver collided head-on with a motorcyclist travelling on the wrong side of the road.

The driver, who did not wish to be named, shared the dashcam footage from the early-morning crash on March 25.

It shows the driver making a right turn to the access road of the A184 in Heworth, Tyne and Wear.

While making the turn, the driver crashes into the motorcyclist – who is seen travelling incorrectly in the righthand lane.

In one fell swoop, the motorcyclist is dislodged from his bike and bounces off the bonnet of the car before falling on to the road.

The driver said: ‘I slammed down my brakes, as I only had about two seconds to react. All I could think of was, “why are you in my lane?”‘

The driver later said: ‘I was travelling home when it happened, the guy was heading towards the golf course and for some reason though he needed to take a right turn there.

‘I slammed down my brakes, as I only had about two seconds to react. All I could think of was, “why are you in my lane?”

‘Afterwards he got up and started looking for his shoe, which came off when he hit the car. I told him to lie down on the grass but he didn’t want to.

‘The police and ambulance were called and took him to the hospital.’

The biker was treated for a slipped disc in his back and three fractures, as well as cuts and bruises.

The driver added: ‘He’s lucky I wasn’t going faster, as the road is a 50mph!’

Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance Service have been approached for comment.
