Teralba townhouse fire: Grave fears for two residents missing after fierce blaze in Newcastle

Two residents of a townhouse are yet to be accounted for after a two-storey building went up in flames.

Emergency services were called to the home on Railway Street in Teralba, southwest Newcastle, about 4:15am on Thursday to reports of a house on fire.

Up to 40 firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the raging blaze but have been unable to locate two of the residents.

It is unknown if they were at the property at the time.

Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Superintendent Mathew Sigmund said the agency is ‘working with police to try and locate them’.

Mr Sigmund said firefighters had been able to enter the building’s bottom floor to try and find the residents but were forced to escape soon after.

‘They have been confronted by extreme fire,’ he said, according to the Newcastle Herald.

‘They did get up to level two but unfortunately due to internal structural collapse they had to withdraw.’

Other residents at the home were able to be evacuated despite the wild blaze, while neighbouring homes were also damaged.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

More to come.
