Desperate search for a mother and her non-verbal son who disappeared in Sydney floodwaters after abandoning their car in a stormwater canal

A desperate search is underway for a mother and son missing in floodwaters after abandoning their car and possessions.

Hemalathasolhyr Satchithanantham, 67, and her son, Bramooth, 34, have not been found since their submerged Mazda 3 was discovered.

The car was found in a stormwater canal in Cooper Creek, in Wentworthville in western Sydney about 4.30pm on Monday.

No one was inside the car but personal items believed to belong to the pair were found and police are concerned for their safety.

Wentworthville, along with many suburbs in western Sydney and around the rest of the city, was battered by storms on Monday and through the night.

Up to 50mm of rain fell in the past 24 hours with widespread flooding forcing tens of thousands of residents in 15 suburbs to evacuate.

Mrs Satchithanantham is described as being of Indian appearance with a medium complexion, standing 165cm tall with a heavy build, 

She has dark shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a white dress with a blue pattern.

Bramooth is described as being of Indian appearance with a medium complexion, standing about 180cm tall with a heavy build.

He has medium-length brown hair and eyes and it was not known what he was last wearing. He has several medical conditions and is non-verbal.
