Savvy shopper reveals the little-known loyalty rewards trick he used to get five free international flights

    • Flybuys user gains points for overseas trips
    • The savvy shopper does heaps of surveys
    • He accumulated enough through Flybuys

A shrewd shopper has won big after his massive haul of rewards card points landed him in five overseas destinations without paying a cent.

Dale picked up the little trick a couple of years ago where he discovered he could earn points on his Flybuys card by doing surveys through the popular rewards program.

He converted the points accumulated through Flybuys to Velocity Frequent Flyer points which he used to fund his travels across the globe.

He completes the surveys while commuting to and from work and didn’t have to pay a cent for his recent overseas flights.

It took just one year to accumulate enough points for the flights.

‘In January, I went to London, Edinburgh and Paris, Muscat in Oman and Abu Dhabi,’ the savvy shopper told A Current Affair.

You can score free flights by accumulating points on loyalty rewards programs such Flybuys and Everyday Rewards

‘I get off the bus at the other end and there’s another 450 points,’ he said.

‘Believe me, I haven’t nailed the costs of living and I’m effected like everyone else.’

‘But completing surveys regularly is a way to accumulatiing a lot of rewards points without actually spending money.’

The savvy shopper also topped up his points by shopping at Coles which led him to gaining enough over just one year to go on an international trip.

He already has enough points for another return flight to Europe and plans to attend the 2024 Olympics in Paris next year.

Velocity Frequent Flyer boss Nick Rohrlach said collecting points was a good way of being rewarded for doing the shopping that has to get done.

‘There’s lots of great ways to earn points so putting that little bit of effort in and doing the research, it’ll happen,’ he said.

‘You can turn your trip down to Coles or Bunnings into a free holiday.’

For Woolworths shoppers, Everyday Rewards also has a loyalty program, where each time your balance reaches 2000 points, 1000 Qantas Points will automatically land in your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

All shoppers need to do is change your Rewards choice to Qantas Points  to shop and scan their way to their next holiday.

Daniel Sciberras, the editor-in-chief of consumer website Point Hacks said customers should use a variety of loyalty cards as long as they don’t pay to sign up.

‘The best way is to get a credit card sign up because they offer the biggest bang in terms of bonus points, you can get up to 100,000 Velocity points in one go,’ Mr Sciberras said.

‘If you’re more loyal to one particularly program, you’re going to be able to earn those points quicker.’

He also warned shoppers to read the terms and conditions fineprint.

More than 17 million people in Australia collect supermarket points, but only 13 per cent convert those to velocity points.
