Police restore calm after two communities clashed over land ownership

Security personnel in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region have restored calm in the area after two communities clashed over the ownership of land.

Three persons sustained machete wounds following the clashes on Tuesday.

When Citi News visited the area on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, pupils were in school, and residents were back to their normal activities.

Following the incident, authorities deployed a team of joint police and military personnel to forestall an escalation.

In an engagement with the members of both communities, the Divisional Commander for Yendi, Chief Superintendent Richard Kumeko, advised residents not to take the law into their own hands.

“Residents should remain calm. They shouldn’t take the law into their own hands. The police have the mandate to investigate anything criminal. There is no law that says when there is a misunderstanding, people should get cutlasses and cut each other. So they should leave the matter to the police because whoever is at fault, the law will deal with them.”

In the meantime, the Municipal Chief Executive for Bimbilla, Abdulai Yaqoub, also urged residents to remain calm.

“I urge them to remain peaceful as the police conduct investigations into the incident. We have met the two communities. The issue also came before MUSEC and they are trying to resolve it. We are in the process of dealing with this unfortunate situation, so we will deal with it and whoever is culpable will be dealt with according to law.”
