The Ghana Police Service has categorically denied reports of a shooting incident at the Office of the Electoral Commission in Kumasi during the ‘Enough is Enough Demonstration’ organised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
In a series of posts shared on social media, the police stated that contrary to reports, no demonstrator has been shot.
It explained that it only restrained some recalcitrant demonstrators, as the protesters were heading to the EC office in Kumasi.
“The Ghana Police Service wishes to state that there has been no shooting incident at the Kumasi office of the Electoral Commission and no demonstrator has been injured by the Police.
“However, some demonstrators who went against the agreed arrangement by forcing their way into the compound of the EC office were restrained. We would like to take this opportunity to urge the media to be circumspect in their reportage,” the posts the police shared read.
Meanwhile, an NDC supporter has been arrested at the party’s ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration in the Ashanti Region.
Though the reasons for his arrest are yet to be known, reports suggest that he was one of those who protested vigorously against the police for preventing them from entering the EC office.
In a subsequent comment, the Regional Chairman of the NDC, Andrews Nana Kwasi, indicated that three NDC supporters had been arrested by the police.
Also, a policewoman was rushed to the hospital following the firing of teargas at the Ashanti Regional EC office.
The policewoman was seen coughing and vomiting at some point following the teargas and was initially put on a motorbike guarded by some other male police officers.
She was subsequently rushed into a police car, which speedily moved to a facility for her treatment.
The NDC protest in the Ashanti Region became chaotic after some supporters of the party were initially denied access to the EC premises by the police.
