Person is arrested after car crashes into Downing Street front gates – police close Whitehall

Whitehall is sealed off after car crashes into Downing Street front gates: Armed police arrest man after silver vehicle hits security barriers outside No 10

A person has been arrested after a car crashed into the front gates at Downing Street.

A large area appears to have been cordoned off, while a silver car with its boot opened can be seen stationary in front of the gates.

City of Westminster Police tweeted: ‘At around 16:20hrs a car collided with the gates of Downing Street on Whitehall.

‘Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving.’

The police added that there are no reports of any injuries and that enquiries are ongoing.

A video aired on the BBC shows the car driving slowly into the gates, but people nearby still flee the area quickly.

BBC is reporting that people at Downing Street have been told to stay indoors, while The Sun reports that Rishi Sunak is believed to be working from Downing Street this afternoon.

This is a breaking story, more to follow.
