Major road is shut down for HOURS while covered in debris after wild high-speed chase ended in a horrific six-car crash and left FIVE in hospital – including Subaru driver under armed guard

Five people are in hospital after a high-speed pursuit led to a horrific six-car smash on one of Australia’s busiest roads, causing traffic chaos for seven hours.

A silver Subaru ploughed into five cars on Parramatta Road at Leichhardt on Saturday morning, leaving several drivers trapped in their cars.

NSW Ambulance rushed to the scene, and paramedics treated the injured drivers on Parramatta Road.

Three people were rushed to nearby Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with ‘serious injuries’, Ambulance NSW told Daily Mail Australia.

Five people are in hospital after a horrific six-car smash on one of Australia’s busiest roads that followed an abandoned police pursuit on Saturday morning

A dramatic six-car smash on one of Australia’s busiest roads led to five people being rushed to hospital on Saturday morning, including five with serious injuries

 The devastation of the early-morning smash on Parramatta Road was obvious from the aftermath, leading to the busy road being closed for over seven hours

The driver, a male in his 30s, who suffered ‘serious head and chest injuries’  was also taken to St George Hospital under police guard.

An eyewitness who was driving to work told The Daily Telegraph the out-of-control Subaru narrowly missed his car in a scene that was ‘like the movies’.

He was in ‘shock’ at the dramatic scene and described at least two drivers unable to get out of their vehicles afterwards.

Traffic and Highway Patrol officers attempted to pull over the Subaru Outback around 6.20am but he refused to stop. 

Police began to pursue the driver but had to quickly terminate the pursuit ‘due to safety concerns’. 

‘The Subaru driver was arrested and taken to St George Hospital, under police guard. He will also undergo mandatory testing,’ a NSW Police statement said.

A crime scene was established as inquiries are conducted into the circumstances surrounding the crash, which blocked all traffic in both directions for over seven hours.

All lanes were closed at 6.37am and Transport NSW confirmed to Daily Mail Australia all eastbound lanes and one westbound lane reopened after 1pm on Saturday.

A fifth patient was transported to St Vincent’s Hospital with minor injuries. 

A large section of Parramatta Road was closed in both directions on Saturday morning for seven hours, between Liverpool Road and Flood Street.

Police, Transport for NSW and tow truck operators were still in attendance early on Saturday afternoon.

The busy road was closed in both directions for hours on Saturdays leading to frustrating delays for motorists

There was also no access to to Parramatta Road from Tebbutt Street and Sloane St (eastbound).

Light vehicles were recommended to use Norton, Marion, Ramsay and Dalhousie streets as alternative routes.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Drivers of route 461, 480 and 483 buses were also instructed to skip 10 stops on Parramatta Road, Transport for NSW advised.
