Billionaire Sam Altman claims he was misled into buying a $27million San Francisco mansion that came with a bat cave – and lots of headaches.
The OpenAI boss filed a lawsuit against the home’s developer through a corporation, claiming he ‘was misled into buying a $27 million lemon’ in 2020.
The suit states that the Russian Hill mansion is ‘plagued by instances of poor workmanship and defects’ which include an improperly installed line that dumps raw sewage on the property.
A disgruntled unpaid contractor also jammed bags into a sewer line, per the filing.
Meanwhile the home’s infinity-edge pool with views of the Bay Area has been a money sink for Altman because of issues with its waterproofing design and installation, as reported by The San Francisco Standard.

Last year the issues with the pool reportedly led to massive flooding in the mansion – which at one point was the most expensive home listing in the city.
The repair costs to the property will exceed $4million, claims the suit, which seeks unspecified damages.
The home’s builder, Troon Pacific, has been the subject of several lawsuits and earlier this year had to pay back $48.1 million to investors of four luxury projects in SF.
The mansion was listed for $40.5 million in 2019 and was then the most expensive listing in the city.

The 9,500 square foot, five bedroom, six and a half bathroom mansion features an expansive compound that takes up an entire block on Lombard Street in the Russian Hill neighborhood, just over a mile from downtown San Francisco.
The lower level includes a four-sided Norwegian stone pool.
Meanwhile the guest house contains its vaulted ceilings, a sauna and a steam room with custom stone benches. Outside sits a hot tub deck with an outdoor shower and great views of the city.
The home also features an interior elevator and a private garden with a with ‘century-old olive trees.’
