My first pay as a dancer in 2017 was GH¢50

Renowned Ghanaian dancer, Champion Rolie, has shared details about the beginning of his dance career and the financial circumstances at that time.

He revealed that he started his dance journey in 2017, and for his first performance, he received a modest sum of GH¢50 as his fee upon completing the event.

Despite the initial discouragement, he remained determined, continuing to dance and, through divine favor, has since prospered financially from his craft.

Rolie acknowledged that the dance scene in Ghana has significantly improved, attributing this progress to the dedication of dancers like Dancegod Lloyd, Incredible Zigi, and others who have raised its status.

He further noted that dance has become a more profitable endeavor compared to earlier times when dancers faced challenges in establishing themselves.

“We all want dance to be something recognizable. Gone are the days when people did not respect dance. People like Incredible Zigi, Dancegod Lloyd, and other amazing dancers have worked so hard to put dance in people’s minds.

“Now every kid wants to dance, it started from somewhere, and we have come this far so it’s all about hard work. Dance pays now and it’s better. When I started in 2017, my first pay was GH¢50. Now, by the grace of God, I have signed big contracts, so on my side, I would say it pays,” he told Anita Akuffo during an interview on TV3.

The prominence of dance in the nation has been further boosted by the achievements of Abigail and Afronitaaa at the 2024 Britain’s Got Talent show in the United Kingdom (UK).
