The Minority in parliament has rejected the Police proposed route for the Bank of Ghana picketing on September 5.

In a letter to the Greater Accra regional police command, COP Dr. Sayibu Pabi Gariba, the Minority leader Cassiel Ato Forson said the proposal in the Police 23rd August, 2023 letter “was not an option discussed with us when my delegation met with you.”

“Your attempt to deny us an opportunity to terminate our #OccupyBoG protest at the Headquarters of the Bank of Ghana on the pretext that it is a ‘security zone’ is untenable, troubling and unwholesome for the Ghana Police Service’s motto of Service with Integrity,” part of the letter said.

“How is the Bank of Ghana Headquarters designated by the Police as a security zone and the Cedi House, another Bank of Ghana edifice that the Police proposed that we march through not a security zone? I do not want to believe that you are citing or hiding behind “security zone” to thwart our planned protest and for the Poiice to shirk its constitutional duty of providing security for persons who desire to publicly manifest their revulsion and abhorrence at the central bank’s reckless managemerit,” it added.

The NDC at a press conference dubbed the “Moment of Truth” on August 8, 2023, called for the resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, over alleged mismanagement of the nation’s central bank.

The party threatened to occupy the central bank if the governor and his team refused to vacate their positions after the 21-day ultimatum.

“In this regard, we call for the resignation of the Governor of the central bank and his deputies within 21 days from today,” it said.

The call comes after the Annual Report and Financial Statement of the Bank of Ghana (BOG) revealed that the BoG had recorded a loss of GH¢60.8 billion, which is equivalent to $6 billion and recorded negative equity of over GH¢55.1 billion.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has however justified the construction of a new headquarters, insisting that its current head office, built in the 1960s, is no longer fit for purpose.
