London’s most dangerous cycle lanes revealed: Hated junction installed by Sadiq Khan has seen almost 30 collisions in five years as campaigners hit out at TfL for being ‘shamefully slow’ in tackling casualties

The most dangerous cycle lane in London is a hated junction installed by Sadiq Khan, it has been revealed.

The junctions in Wandsworth where Ansell Road, Derinton Road, Price Close and Lessingham Avenue meet the A24, Upper Tooting Road, have seen 29 cyclist casualties in the last five years.

The London Cycling Campaign (LCC), which compiled the data, said its findings were ‘horrific’ and blasted Sadiq Khan and TfL for being ‘shamefully slow’ in improving safety.

Khan’s Conservative mayoral election rival Susan Hall slammed the sitting Mayor following the revelation.

She told MailOnline: ‘Sadiq Khan has once again failed to keep Londoners safe, by installing London’s most dangerous cycle lane in his own backyard.

‘We need a Mayor who will prioritise the safety of Londoners, and ensure that cycle lanes are installed responsibly in practical locations.’

Four of the worst cycle lanes were in south London.

Transport is supposed to be ‘central’ to Sadiq Khan’s vision for London. He previously announced plans to eliminate every death on roads and other transport networks in the capital by 2041.

His plan said: ‘It is neither inevitable nor acceptable that anyone should be killed or seriously injured when travelling in London.

‘When we leave our homes each day, we should feel safe and confident about the journey ahead.’

Tom Fyans, chief executive of London Cycling Campaign, said: ‘Behind this horrific data are hundreds of stories of families torn apart by tragedy and lives changed forever.

‘Whilst cycling and indeed walking and wheeling remain relatively safe… TfL, the mayor and our boroughs must move faster and be bolder on road danger to stem the human cost posed by dangerous junctions and poor road designs.’

Celia Duncan, co-ordinator of Wandsworth Cycling Campaign, said: ‘Years of inaction on road danger and cycling means it is sadly unsurprising that Wandsworth not only has the most dangerous junction for cycling in its bounds, but two junctions in the top 10.

‘We’ve known for years that the rat runs that intersect Cycle Superhighway CS7 need tackling, and that far from being ‘revolutionary’, Queen’s Circus falls far below modern cycling design standards; and that our Council prioritises driving convenience over the physical safety of its residents.’

Although many Londoners are deeply unhappy with the Labour mayor, the latest polls put him ahead of his Conservative mayoral rival Susan Hall.

Walking and Cycling Commissioner Will Norman told MailOnline: ‘The Mayor and I are committed to eliminating deaths and serious injuries from London’s streets.

‘We are delivering high-quality cycle routes and investing in work that makes dangerous junctions safer – we have a strong track record, having almost quadrupled the size of London’s Cycleway network since 2016, from 90km to 350km this year.

‘We have also accelerated our 20mph speed limit programme and are tightening the Direct Vision Safety standard for HGVs.

‘The Mayor and I will continue to work with councils, communities and politicians across the political spectrum to make cycling even safer, as we continue building a better London for everyone.’

A spokesperson for Transport for London said it had reduced danger at 44 junctions as part of their Safer Junctions programme.

They said: ‘We continue to work on designs for a significant number of further locations… including many of those highlighted by this data.’
