Retired Captain Joel Sowu has revealed a poignant moment in Ghana’s history when its first President, Kwame Nkrumah, broke down in tears upon learning that the country was financially insolvent.
This revelation came during an interview with host Kafui Dey, where Capt. Sowu shared insights into the challenges faced by heads of state, often exacerbated by the influence of powerful, self-serving groups.
Capt. Sowu explained how these mafia-like groups tend to encircle presidents, creating a barrier that prevents them from seeing the true state of affairs in their countries.
This phenomenon, he noted, is a common occurrence soon after a head of state assumes office.
“Immediately upon becoming heads of state, there are certain people who constitute a mafia, and they cocoon you. It happened to Kwame Nkrumah. They make sure you don’t see the reality on the ground; you don’t know what is happening. So what they tell you, to you, that is the thing,” he elaborated.
Recalling a specific instance with Nkrumah, Capt. Sowu described the emotional reaction of the then-president upon receiving dire economic news.
“The day they told Kwame Nkrumah we were broke, he wept,” he said, stressing the profound impact of such revelations on national leaders who are often shielded from harsh realities by those around them.
