A University of Ghana lecturer, Professor Daniel Frimpong Ofori, has urged the government to adopt a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) model across ministries to enhance monitoring and evaluation for greater accountability.

Professor Frimpong highlighted the need for a CSR secretariat within the Ministry of Trade and Industry, given its pertinent duties, although he is uncertain of its current existence.

He suggested the formation of a specialized committee of CSR experts to devise an effective implementation strategy.

“When we finished that policy, we all agreed that the lead agency is MOTI, the Ministry of Trade and Industry. We all agreed that they will house a CSR secretariat, which will spearhead periodic policy reviews. Right now, I have no idea whether that thing is there or not.

“Then the national CSR secretariat will be responsible for developing strategy and guidelines at all levels, promoting and encouraging CSR activities, providing services, monitoring, and evaluation inside the ministry. Let’s establish a national CSR steering committee full of knowledgeable people in CSR, like me. And let’s come and drive it for you. We shall endorse the CSR policy review,” he said.

His remarks were part of a lecture titled “Indomie, Kalypo, and condoms: An intimate conversation about corporate social responsibility in Ghana,” delivered at the Great Hall of UG on June 27, 2024.

Meanwhile, Corporate social responsibility is a self-regulatory business approach that enables a company to be socially accountable to itself, its stakeholders, and the public.
