A Hip-life rapper turned gospel musician, Nazareth Opoku Agyeman, formerly known as Kojo Denkyem, has shared the harrowing story of how he lost his sanity while pursuing success in the music industry.
Now known as ‘Call Me Nazareth,’ he recounted the dreadful experience that led to his transformation in an interview with ZionFelix.
Starting his career as a young rapper in Ashaiman, Greater Accra Region, Nazareth narrated how he struggled to make a breakthrough.
His pressures mounted as he watched fellow artists like Sarkodie and D Cryme, whom he started with, achieve success while he remained at the same level.
“I started with rap because we thought that was the best way to blow up. So I used to go to Rex Studios to record demos and see if we could get a tape out. I was a very good rapper then.
“Along the way, artistes like Sarkodie, D Cryme and co started blowing up. But I and a few others were still there,” he said.
Desperate for success, he and a close friend decided to seek help from a fetish priest.
Unbeknownst to Nazareth, his friend had conspired with the priest to use him as the ritual sacrifice instead.
“The guy and I were very good friends and planned to release a joint album before going our separate ways.
“So the witch doctor told us to perform a blood covenant ritual which we did. Not knowing my friend had sabotaged me, he would be the one to blow up while I died.
“After we poured the blood on, the fetish priest spoke many words to encourage us. But then, the priest and my friend started speaking in a language I couldn’t understand,” he shared.
Following this encounter, Nazareth began experiencing severe spiritual attacks and nightmares but was told that it did not mean anything.
These continued until he eventually went mad.
“For nearly two years, I battled with my mental health, I will be fine one minute, the next minute I will be rambling and running around.
“This continued until I met a man of God, referred to as Oluman, in 2009,” he said.
Through Oluman’s intervention, Nazareth was healed and delivered from his affliction.
Reflecting on his ordeal, Nazareth revealed that it was only after his deliverance that he learned of his friend’s betrayal.
After his recovery, Nazareth embraced Christianity and changed his name to ‘Call Me Nazareth.’
He has since dedicated his life to gospel music, using his story as a testament to the power of faith and redemption.
