Hundreds of Jair Bolsonaro supporters STORM Brazil’s Congress building

Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invade Brazil’s Congress in Brasilia – after refusing to accept new President Lula’s victory in ‘stolen’ election – copying Trump-inspired January 6th invasion of the US Capitol in 2021

  • An estimated 3,000 people stormed Brazil’s Congress on Sunday in protest
  • They believe that President Lula’s victory was stolen from right-wing Bolsonaro
  • His supporters have been demanding that the military get involved in the row

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have stormed the National Congress building in Brasilia  – in a move similar to Trump Voters’ January 6 invasion.

The protestors invaded the building and are calling for the military to overthrow current President Luiz Inacio.

Left-wing veteran Inacio has only been in power for a week, after being inaugurated a week ago as supporters of the former president claim the election was stolen.

Footage from the scenes strike an eerie similarity to those who stormed the Capitol building on January 6th after claims from former PResident Trump that the election was stolen.

It comes after da Silva, known as Lula, defeated far-right Bolsonaro in an October election.

President da Silva is currently on an official state trip in São Paulo, after saying in his inauguration speech he would rebuild a country in ‘terrible ruins’.

Others demonstrators were gathering outside the presidential palace and Supreme Court, although it was not immediately clear whether they had managed to break into the buildings.

Bolsonaro supporters have been protesting against Lula’s electoral win since Octobter 30.

They have been blocking roads, setting vehicles on fires and gathering outside military buildings, asking armed forces to intervene in the election

Local media have estimated that 3,000 people are involved in the protests – donning yellow and green T-shirts and holding Brazilian flags.

Protesters have climbed a ramp which gives access to the roof of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate buildings.

Those who broke into the building are also accused of attacking police vehicles which secured the building, as well as protection barriers.

Bolsonaro left Brazil for Florida 48 hours before the end of his mandate – repeatedly questioned, without evidence, the credibility of the country’s electronic voting system.
