The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has raised questions about the government’s expenditure during the 13th African Games hosted in Ghana.

He expressed concerns over the government spending approximately $85 million to renovate stadiums that were not in dire condition.

Mahama suggested that not all the funds were used for rehabilitation, implying that some officials involved in the organisation might have misappropriated the money for personal gain.

“The African Games allocated $85 million for sports stadium rehabilitation, but much of this money was looted. The athletes who came to Ghana for the games spent 15 days here, yet we spent $15 million on feeding them. This means $1 million was spent on feeding each day. Some of these figures are astonishing,” he said in Twi during a campaign rally, as reported by GhOne TV on X.

Mahama’s remarks come after reports indicated that $85 million was allocated for stadium rehabilitation for the games hosted in Ghana.

The Legon Sports Stadium, one of the main venues, was completed to host the games as its previous state was not fit-for-purpose.

The stadium was used for most events, including athletics and football.
