Mercy Babachuweh, the headmistress of the Navrongo Senior High School (Navasco), has urged old students of the school to keep up the good work of bringing support to the institution.

Ms. Babachuweh said the contribution of old students to the improvement of the school’s infrastructure challenges was commendable and needed to be maintained.

The headmistress said since she assumed office, old students of the school have demonstrated their unflinching commitment to their alma mater through various projects, including the renovation of three dormitory blocks.

She said whereas the Parents and Teachers Association of the school was doing its bit to enhance teaching and learning, the old students were also doing the most to improve the poor state of existing infrastructure.

Speaking when she received a refurbished 300-bed capacity girls’ dormitory block from the old student’s association on behalf of the management of the school, Ms. Babachuweh labeled as impressive the enormous support the school continues to enjoy from its old students.

Ms. Babachuweh said, “Since I took over, Garvey-Abatey block was handed over. It was followed by Kennedy and Aggrey block and today, we are here for Indes- Luther king. I belong to Slessor-Tono and I know we are also gearing up and very soon we will come and also do another handing over.”

“We are very grateful to Nabia for this wonderful gesture. We are pleading with other Nabia to come to our aid especially in renovating the other dormitories.

When it comes to furniture, we have a challenge. We had to rely on the PTA for this academic year who came to our aid. They constructed (PTA) 200 pieces of furniture for us and that is what is even helping us to be able to write our exams.”

Paramount Chief of the Navrongo Traditional Area, Navro-Pio P3 Asagpaare Aneakwoa Balinia Adda II, who is an old student of the school and former housemate of Independence House, commended the old students and former housemates for the refurbishment of the block.

Navro-Pio touched on the need for the old students to continue to combine efforts to project the development of the school for the benefit of future generations.

P3 Asagpaare expressed worry over the dwindling performance of the school in recent years and pledged to award Ghc2,000 to any female student who would score As in all subjects in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

He noted that the Ghc2,000 pledge was to encourage the students particularly the girls to take their studies seriously.

He said, “I’m challenging the female students. Any girl who gets 8 As (in the WASSCE), come with your headmistress, I will give you Ghc2,000. This is to encourage and motivate them (girls) to study hard.”
