The Federal Government on Sunday condemned the Coup De’tat in Guinea were soldiers loyal to Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, Head of Special Forces, sacked President Alpha Condé from power.
In a statement signed by the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esther Sunsuwa, the federal government expressed sadness, adding that the incident is “in clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.”
The statement also disclosed that “the government of Nigeria strongly condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government.”
This is as it called “on those behind this coup to restore constitutional order without delay and protect all lives and property.”
Crisis rocked part of Guinea following the recent election in which the President, Alpha Condé won a controversial third term in office, preliminary results show, amid violent protests across the country.
Guinea’s leading opposition figure Cellou Dalein Diallo appealed against President Alpha Conde’s victory in the October 2020 presidential election at the country’s constitutional court.
The opposition figure’s lawyer, Amadou Diallo, told the media that the appeal, filed on Sunday, contains “irrefutable evidence” that irregularities marred the election.
“The personalization of political life is over. We will no longer entrust politics to one man; we will entrust it to the people,” Col. Doumbouya said.
