God has given us Otumfuo, who is above all Kings on earth

The youth of Asanteman are up in arms over recent comments made by a journalist against the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, which they deemed derogatory.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, September 20, 2024, one of the leaders of the Asanteman Youth for Culture and Development sounded a strong warning to any person who tries to denigrate the Asantehene.

He indicated that the Asantehene is a leader like no other in Ghana who has saved the country on several occasions and demands respect.

“God has given us a king who is above all on this earth. God has given us a king who thinks about Ghana and wants peace for the nation. Today, we want Ghanaians to know that no king in Ghana wants peace and development for the country more than the Asantehene.

“If no one sees the things the Asantehene has done for Ghana, we, the grandchildren and subjects, know what he has done for us. Leaders from all parts of the world have testified to his works. We have seen the things he has done, and he is our King, today, tomorrow, and forever,” he said in the Twi dialect.

He added, “We are sounding this strong caution… we have seen that there are people in this country with wicked intentions, they walk backwards and not forward. They have started talking against our linguist and the King. We want everyone to understand that if they want to insult someone, they should insult the chiefs of their hometowns. If you have something to say, say it against your father and mother who gave birth to you and not our King.”

Background:

The troubles began when Afia Pokua, a journalist at Agoo TV, criticised the Asantehene for his perceived silence amid ongoing conflicts involving his subjects and other tribes, including the Bonos.

On Onua FM’s ‘Bribi Gye Gye wo,’ hosted by Mona Gucci, Pokua expressed frustration with what she sees as Ashantis proving superiority over other tribes and the Asantehene’s refusal to act on it.

These statements have led to widespread outrage among the Ashantis, with Afia Schwarzenegger particularly vocal in her criticism.
