Meta owns Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp – but not Twitter, which has just been taken over by Elon Musk

Others say the sites are just timing out. Most are turning to Twitter to complain about the issues as it is not owned by Meta and seems unaffected.

Problems began to appear at around 8pm, with a peak number of problems logged with site tracker Down Detector at around 8.50pm.

At 8.50pm on Friday, almost 15,000 people logged a problem with Instagram at once.

One Facebook user said: ‘Open my account for me, Facebook… Every account we open gets blocked without any reason… and you don’t have any support… What is this nonsense?’
