Easter long weekend store opening hours 2022: What’s open on Good Friday in Australia

Pubs and restaurants do roaring trade but it’s too late to grab an extra case for the family barbeque: Your guide to what is still open on Good Friday

  • Major supermarkets to keep the shutters down on Friday, including liquor stores
  • Plenty of entertainment on tap, with Easter Show, Luna Park and more opening
  • Trading hours extended for Sydney Fish Markets, most shopping centres closed

Good Friday, the holiest day on the Christian calendar, means that all bottle shops and most supermarkets across Australia will be closed.

But many clubs, cafes, pubs and restaurants are still allowed to trade.

Those lucky enough to have the day off will be able to buy alcohol at licenced premises with a meal in most states.

While most pubs and clubs will be open, they are expected to close by 10pm, while most shopping centres and supermarkets will remain closed.

Coles, Woolworths and Aldi will have their doors sealed, yet many IGAs are staying open.

A smorgasbord of entertainment venues remain open on Friday, with cinemas, zoos and aquariums open.

Major museums will have their doors unlatched, as well as the State Library of NSW, but The Art Gallery of NSW will be shut on that day.

Zoos and aquariums are remaining open for Easter public holiday makers, including Taronga Zoo, the Australian Reptile Park and SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium.

The Royal Easter Show will bring cheer after the dogged two-year lockdowns with dog competitions, rides, rodeos, showbags and tucker up for grabs.

The grounds will open gates at 9am, with pavilions remaining open to 8.30pm.

Sydney’s Luna Park is set to open its mouth to visitors from 10am to 10pm on the day, but Western Sydney’s Raging Waters will be closed.

Sydney Fish Markets phones might be off the hook as they deal with expected influx of customers buying up on the day, with extended trading hours from 5am to 5pm on Easter Friday.

Some health workers will get a reprieve as GPs and Medical centres plan to be closed on the day, with popular pharmacies like Chemist Warehouse and Priceline closing too.

Public transport users are reminded that travel will be free for 12 consecutive Easter days, from April 14 to April 26, and will run to a Sunday timetable on Friday.

The state government put forward the cost-free deal to encourage commuters to use the network again after huge disruptions to trains caused havoc last month.
