Coronavirus Australia: NSW records just 283 new cases but it’s a grim day with day seven deaths

NSW records just 283 new cases after almost 600 children under nine were infected with Covid in the past week

  • NSW recorded 283 new Covid cases on Wednesday, slightly up from Tuesday
  • There were seven deaths from Covid and 552 people were admitted to hospital
  • The number sent to intensive care wards dropped slightly to 124
  • NSW Health chart shows nearly 600 kids under nine infected last week

New Covid cases remain low but it remains a sad day with seven deaths from the virus announced on Wednesday.

NSW recorded just 283 new infections, a slight rise in new cases from the day before, but the trajectory of the key number has been headed down as the state continues to enjoy a return to freedom after nearly four months of lockdown

The details of the seven deaths were not yet available but are expected to be announced later on Wednesday morning.

Four deaths were reported on Tuesday.

Hospitalisations also declined again on Wednesday, falling from 589 on Tuesday to 552 and Covid patients admitted to intensive care wards also fell.

Despite Covid-19 cases in NSW continuing to decline, nearly 600 children under nine were counted among the state’s locally acquired cases in the past week.

The statistic from NSW Health also shows over 400 children and teens in the 10-19 age bracket were infected, while similar levels were recorded in the 20-29 and 30-39 age groups.

The figures are a sobering reminder of the infectiousness of the Delta strain in younger people, with transmission up to five times higher than the 2020 version of the virus, data from the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) showed.
