Chinese truck dangles over the edge of a cliff after getting lost on sat nav

Container truck hangs over the edge of 330ft cliff in nerve-wracking footage after driver tried to reverse when satnav took him up narrow mountain road in China

  • The truck driver was delivering goods in Changzhi in Shanxi Province, China
  • The HGV got stuck while following a shortcut suggested by his sat nav device
  • He drove up a narrow mountain pass which was too small for his large truck
  • Three heavy dumper trucks were used to rescue the truck from certain doom

This is the moment a truck in China was hanging off the edge of a cliff after the driver got lost while following sat nav.

The incident happened on New Year’s Day in the city of Changzhi in Shanxi Province in northern China.

Local officials said the driver continued along the narrow mountain road because he was following the directions on his sat nav.

The front wheel of the truck slipped over the edge of a cliff after the driver attempted to reverse the vehicle down a narrow mountain track after getting stuck

The trucker was following his sat nav device along the mountain track when the roadway became too narrow to continue.

The driver was lucky the trailer did not push his truck over the edge and down into the ravine

However, as the road became increasingly narrow the driver decided to go back down the mountain, but was unable to turn his truck.

Instead, he began reversing the lorry edging between the rock face on one side and a steep cliff on the other.

One of the truck’s wheels slipped off the roadway leaving the vehicle dangling perilously over the cliff.

The driver and a passenger managed to escape from the cab before an attempt was made to rescue the truck from tumbling down the mountain.

Rescuers used three heavy dumper trucks to drag the truck back onto the roadway.

The rescue squad chained the three dumpers together and bolted a snatch block to the side of the mountain.

The team then attached a heavy steel wire to the truck, around the snatch block to the first of the dumper trucks.

Once everything was safely attached, the rescuers reversed up the mountain, pulling the truck back onto the road.

The snatch block ensured the truck was pulled away from the edge and back onto the carriageway. If the rescuers had attached the bond directly to the truck, it could have been dragged sideways and slipped down the mountainside – possibly pulling the dumper trucks with it.

According to CGTN, the roadway was reopened on January 4, having been closed since January 1.
