Byron Bay: Tragedy as surfer’s body is pulled from the water

A surfer has tragically died after being pulled from the surf at a popular tourist beach.

Emergency services were called to Main Beach at Byron Bay, on NSW‘s far-north coast, about 9:30am on Monday to reports of a man unconscious in the surf.

The 59-year-old man was pulled to shore where Surf Lifesavers and paramedics treated the man.

A NSW Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the man was then rushed to Lismore Base Hospital in a critical condition where he died some time later.

The most popular beach in the area was closed on Tuesday after the Bureau of Meteorology issued a hazardous surf warning along the Byron Coast.

‘People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas,’ the warning reads.

More to come.
