A charity director who was three times over the drink driving limit after bingeing on wine crashed her car into the same lamppost twice in a failed attempt to flee a hit-and-run.

Mother-of-three Kelly Ryan, 44, had collided into the back of parked car as she attempted to drive home in her Audi A5 following a night out with friends in Manchester city centre on October 24 last year.

But when she reversed to make a quick getaway, Ryan inadvertently drove into the lamppost and then hit it again as she made a further attempt to speed off, before deciding to take off on foot.

Ryan failed a roadside breath test with a later reading showing 118 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Representing herself at Manchester magistrates court, she said: ‘I am mortified at what happened – especially when I had to explain it to my kids. I have no defence for it, I can’t justify what I did in any way.’

Charity director Kelly Ryan, 44, has been banned from driving for three years after crashing into the back of a car in Manchester while over three times the drink driving limit

Ryan, from Fallowfield, Manchester, was banned from driving for three years after she admitted driving with excess alcohol and failing to stop after a road smash.

It emerged she had a previous drink driving conviction from 2012.

Rebecca Pearson, prosecuting said: ‘At around 11.30pm on the October 24 last year, the defendant was driving down Albert Road, in Levenshulme, Manchester.

‘A member of public who lived nearby to the road noticed a loud noise coming from the road, when they looked out of their window they could see that the defendant had crashed her black Audi A5 into the back of a stationary Toyota Yaris that was parked on the road.

‘She reversed back from the Yaris and drove straight into a nearby lamp post, hitting it head on. Whilst trying to drive away she drove into the lamp post again.

She then drove down the road and stopped on a pavement, where she got out and left the car at the scene.

‘Whilst this was happening, the member of public called the police and they eventually found the defendant later that evening not far from the scene.’

Representing herself in court, Ryan said she was 'mortified' by what had happened and added: 'I can't justify what I did in any way'

The amount of damage caused during Ryan’s raucous trip on the road is not known.

She was arrested shortly after leaving her car, following the sighting by a passer-by. Ryan was found to be more than three times the alcohol limit.

She was later said to be ‘mortified’ after sobering up and having to break the news of her unruly behaviour to her children aged 16, 13 and 11.

According to Companies House, Ryan was the director of an animal welfare business.

District Judge Jane Hamilton subjected Ryan to 90 days on an electronic tag as part of alcohol abstinence requirement. She was also ordered to pay £199 costs and complete eight rehabilitation activity days plus 50 hours of unpaid work.

The judge told Ryan: ‘I appreciate you do not have a problem with drink but it is the bingeing element that causes a serious problem in this case.’
