Brunswick shopping centre stabbing as Barkly Square shopping centre evacuated in Melbourne


BREAKING: Two people are stabbed by a crazed knifeman in Coles supermarket as a Melbourne shopping centre is evacuated and shop owners hide in their stores

Two people have been allegedly stabbed by a knifeman at a busy shopping centre in Melbourne.   

The attacker allegedly knifed the shoppers at a Coles in Barkly Square shopping centre on Sydney Road at Brunswick at 8am on Monday. 

Staff were forced to lock themselves inside their nearby stores while the attack unfolded.

Barkly Square was cordoned off by police following the alleged stabbing on Monday morning

‘There’s a guy running around with a knife and he stabbed a customer in the Coles supermarket,’ one person said.

‘All of the employees are locked up in their various shops.’ 

Police arrested the alleged attacker before he was taken to hospital to be treated for self-inflicted wounds. 

Two men were also taken to St Vincents Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. 

One victim is aged in their 50s and suffered injuries to their upper and lower body. The other suffered an injury to their upper body.

One shopper described seeing a man covered in blood and yelling and screaming in the centre.

‘I was scared, I was petrified,’ she told the Herald Sun.

‘I just wanted to get away from there. I don’t know what would have happened if that security guard and that (other man) didn’t step in.’

The incident has caused minor delays to public transport with Route 19 trams to Flinders Street running behind schedule

She claimed police told the knifeman to put down the weapon before he refused and officers were forced to use capsicum spray. 

Officers have cordoned off the area with police tape. 

A Victoria Police spokesperson said: ‘Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident and there is no threat to the community.’

Barkly Square released a statement saying that staff were assisting police with their inquiries. 

‘Police are attending and we are assisting them with their inquiries,’ a spokesperson said.

‘As this is a police matter, we are unable to provide further details at this time.’

The incident has caused minor delays to public transport with Route 19 trams to Flinders Street running behind schedule.
